This raw silk comes from a remote province, where the weavers are primarily rice farmers. They weave in their spare time and mostly during the monsoon rains. All families have looms under the houses, which are raised up on stilts. Both men, women, and children are weavers. Unlike Thailand, the Cambodians buy their raw silk from Vietnam, as many of the mulberry trees and silk farms are no longer operational since the Khmer Rouge genocide. Currently there are efforts to reintroduce silk farms in rural areas, but not in their area. Any weaving imperfections or variations in dye lots are inherent and a natural characteristic of hand-woven and hand-dyed silks.
